DEALING WITH STRESS II
As a veteran of many stress-filled times in my life, I can understand the discomfort that comes with it. Unfortunately for me, in the most difficult times, I didn’t know much about dealing with those demands and the stress involved. I have learned a great deal since then. It might be good to begin with a definition of stress: “the failure to respond adequately to mental, emotional or physical demands, actual or imagined.”
It seems that the level of demands in our lives continues to increase, and the level of our personal stress along with it. So what might we do to alleviate the unhealthy responses stress can cause? Here are a few methods you or your team members could try:
• Start the morning with some kind of meditation or prayer. A few moments of quiet can make a strong foundation for a difficult day.
• Learn what causes your stress level to go up. This may require some deeper thought, since the roots can go deep into our being.
• Concentrate on breathing deeply In a difficult situation; it will tend to relax you.
• Remember that some stress is good. A certain amount is part of being alive and well.
• Decide each day to accept and deal with stress in a healthy way.
Many of us have demands made on us electronically all day long: texting, e-mail, Facebook, telephone, FAX. The list could go on. Plus we have the necessary human interactions, some of which are unpleasant and dissatisfying. Add in some noise and confusion plus fatigue and it is a recipe for higher stress.
We can’t always change the stressors, but we can change the way we respond to them. Learning to deal with stress in a healthy way will lead to a better life for you and your team members.
